- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 15131334, 10 months agoexcellent tool. gave it 4 stars but it's 4.99. that missing 0.01 point is for the icon that i find a bit unaesthetic and doesn't compliment the usefulness of this tool. may i suggest you change it to a more minimalitic design that matches the mozilla icons? hope you will consider, would definetly bring it to a flawless 5 stars for me. thank you for making this great little tool.
Developer response
posted 10 months agoHello, thank you, any suggestion ? (if you can place that in https://github.com/aaFn/Bookmark-search-plus-2/issues)
My skills on icon design are not the best :-)
The idea is to keep a reference / similarity to the FF bookmarks icon, with something showing a "plus", and easily distinguishable from the standard FF bookmarks icon. - Rated 4 out of 5by fireman0909, 2 years agoThere is a problem with the way the favicon is obtained.
First, open a bookmark that has already acquired a favicon.
Then open another bookmark in the same tab before the page finishes loading.
Then the acquired favicon disappears.
Please fix this problem.
------------------------
The above issue seems to have been resolved. thank you.
However, there was another problem.
Unable to open external file bookmarks.
for example,
file:///D:/Download/WebScrapBook/data/20230405010758065/index.html
I can't open bookmarks starting with 'file:///' like this.
Please fix it.Developer response
posted 2 years agoHello @fireman0909, yes, I fixed the issue as I initially answered to your comment I believe (but this edit doesn't show anymore, not sure why).
On the second problem you mention, this is because of Firefox security policy = it doesn't allow add-ons to open such URLs, as I documented in the Limitations section of the add-on. This cannot be changed.
Thank you, aaFn. - Rated 4 out of 5by kiwichick, 2 years agoI have just started using this and I absolutely love it, especially being able to see which folder a bookmark is saved in. The only issues I have found so far are:
1) I have 'Remember size of resizeable objects' checked but the search pane isn't permanent (it is with the bookmark Properties window). If I close then re-open the bookmarks sidebar, the search resize is lost. If I choose another entry from the sidebar dropdown (eg: Bookmarks, History) then return to BSP2, the search resize is lost. There is nothing in Options that says this is expected behaviour so, if it is, can a note please be added to specify this.
2) Closing and reopening the bookmark sidebar, or choose another entry from the sidebar dropdown and returning to BSP2, doesn't retain the scroll position in the bookmark list.
IN RESPONSE TO YOUR REPLY:
1) Thank you for investigating.
2) No, you are not misunderstanding. I see that the scroll returns to center. That's all good if it's expected behaviour. At least it hasn't been scrolled out of view.Developer response
posted 2 years agoHello kiwichick, thank you for the feedback.
On 1), that was working in the past -> I see this is not working anymore,
I will investigate.
On 2), the cursor position (= selected bookmark) is retained and shown again when opening. FF and CSS center the view on it, so that might be a little different scrolling position than when quitting, but this should be close enough. Am I misunderstanding what you are saying ?
Note: for reporting issues / bugs, the best is to open them there -> https://github.com/aaFn/Bookmark-search-plus-2/issues
since then it is easy to follow up and to discuss, and to make sure that I can properly address them (this is hard to do on this add-on comment page).
============ update 17/01/2023 ===========
On 1), problem investigated, this was indeed a regression, fixed in 2.0.112 now published.
Thank you.
On 2), ok, thank you, yes this is the best behavior that can be easily achieved with GUI/presentation functions available to the add-on. - Rated 4 out of 5by freesailor, 3 years agoVery good, fast and easy to use.
The feature I miss the most is the ability to mark multiple bookmarks to move them all together from one folder to another.Developer response
posted 3 years agoHello @freesailor, now multiple bookmarks selection is possible, since version 2.0.103 :-) ! - Rated 4 out of 5by mao, 4 years ago
- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 16654240, 4 years agoFinally able to get to work after add/remove and restart Firefox. Working now and perfectly...
- Rated 4 out of 5by Cormchij, 5 years agoGreat, handy addon. But it does not open local links to files and folders on the PC like: file: /// F: /TCVIMG/*.* and file: /// F: / TCVIMG /. Standard bookmark manager - understands and opens everything normally. This is inconvenient if you need to view a file on the HDD. Make it open such local links.
Developer response
posted 5 years agoHello @Cormchij, correct, this is forbidden by Firefox, add-ons cannot access / open local files.
Have a look at the Browser console (Ctrl+Shift+J) when you click on such a bookmark in BSP2, you will see security messages in it saying Firefox prevented using the URL:
"Error: Illegal URL: file:///E:...."
Note that there seems you could have a workaround, but this requires that you modify your Firefox config: http://www.websina.com/bugzero/kb/browser-file-url.html (an add-on cannot do that of course) - Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 5509918, 5 years agoExcelent addon! But it's not fast. And when I create a new folder, the popup window runs to the right and down from the screen and slows down very much, and I can't see the input folder name field.
Developer response
posted 5 years agoHello, thank you.
Yes, because of a few limitations in the Firefox API, this is creating in fact a small browser window, not a simple property panel, so this is is slower. And to add to that, some Firefox discrepancies between OS and behavior force an opening in two steps, creating the window very small and at default place, and then moving it and enlarging it to get it painted properly :-(
Now, on the position of the window itself, it is saved, so you can move it, and next time it is open, it will reappear at the place you moved it to the previous time, so that should solve your point about not seeing the input folder name field (note: that also works if you have firefox spanning multiple screens ..) - Rated 4 out of 5by Notlaw, 5 years agoCould have an option to open into the Ctrl+Shift+B window [not shortcut].
Or just be able to move folders by dragging them into Firefox bookmark bar [under address bar].
The major thing I like in this addon is the option to search bookmark folders.Developer response
posted 5 years agoHello @Notlaw, thank you.
The first demand is made impossible by FF for Web extensions, the Boomark History window is not customizable and no add-on can run within it, sorry.
The second one you mention is in fact hitting a bug I opened on FF some time ago https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1531539
=> we are waiting for it to be corrected by FF so that it can work.
=> Meanwhile, the work around is to drag the folder you want to move to the bookmark bar, and to drop it into the "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder inside of BSP2, at top of the bookmark tree .. and the result will be the same.
Thank you, aaFn. - Rated 4 out of 5by Claudio, 5 years ago
- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 13400558, 5 years agoI love BSP2. But I had a mishap that I hope can be solved. I reorganized some bookmarks with BSP2. Firefox crashed during shutdown. Now BSP2 contains the right bookmark structure but Firefox doesn't. Neither "show all bookmarks" nor the FF bookmark menus contain the missing folders or the bookmarks in them - the ones I was working with.
I know the missing folders and bookmarks exist somewhere because BSP2 displays them -- even after restarting the computer. Is there a way to get them into the main Firefox bookmark set?
Stan HilliardDeveloper response
posted 5 years agoHello Stan, yes this is one of the benefits of BSP2 to go past FF corruptions in the native bookmarks DB when they appear / already exist.
A careful way to proceed, but which loses tags if you have any (until FF allows us to copy tags :-( ) is typically:
- Go in BSP2 to a folder which is not showing anymore in the native sidebar
- Copy it (right click and click "Copy")
- Go to another place which is not corrupt
- Right click there and click "Paste before" or "Paste into" if a folder
- Go to the native sidebar, and verify the copied folder is there
- When all is good (can take some time when folders are big), you can delete the old "lost" folder in BSP2
A bolder way to proceed, but which should keep the tags, is typically:
- Go in BSP2 to a folder which is not showing anymore in the native sidebar
- Cut it (right click and click "Cut") - you are safe so far, as Cut does not remove anything, it just says that a future paste will be a move instead of a copy
- Go to another place which is not corrupt
- Right click there and click "Paste before" or "Paste into" if a folder - this step is safe in fact, except when FF crashes or the corruption is too strong .. should be very rare though
- Go to the native sidebar, and verify the moved folder is there
Hope this helps. If any problem, let me know on https://github.com/aaFn/Bookmark-search-plus-2/issues
Note that FF corrupts its bookmark DB on its own .. BSP2 does not play a role in that.
This is why there is a backup function of bookmarks in FF (saved everyday automatically by FF, you can find the backups in one of the menus of the Bookmarks Library). - Rated 4 out of 5by sharon clerc, 5 years agoNot quite as simple as original parent folder finder, but at least it works.
- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 14179994, 5 years agoI love this app, but I wish it would also allow you to do tags and keywords like the regular firefox bookmarks do!
Developer response
posted 5 years agoHello, yes we would all love to, but no app can do that for now, this is not provided by Firefox :-(
If you can vote on Bugzilla to get this promoted, please do so .. it is P3 right now, and 4 years old -> https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1225916 - Rated 4 out of 5by wtfs, 5 years agono method to select multiple bookmark at sametime in the sidebar, such as holding ctrl or shift keys to select multiple bookmark to move or delete.

I also see that https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx (Speravir ?) suggested some customizations specific to BSP2. If you can bring him in, we could also see how to integrate better maybe ?
Cheers, aaFn. - Rated 4 out of 5by jon482, 6 years agoWhy can't anyone make a Addon that searches for folders!! I have spent a ridiculous amount of time looking for something that finds the NAMES of folders and have found none. I really like this addon however can the developer make this perfect by adding search folder functionality. Thanks.
Developer response
posted 6 years agoHello jon482, this add-on searches for any bookmark item, be they folders or bookmarks.
For folders, this is using their title, which is what I believe you call their name.
For bookmarks, this is using their title or their url, whichever matches.
So it does what you want .. or let me know what I am missing.
If there is a feature you would like to see added, please ask here -> https://github.com/aaFn/Bookmark-search-plus-2/issues
Thank you, aaFn. - Rated 4 out of 5by taharqa, 6 years agoThis is the best firefox bookmark organizer I ever installed.
The only little thing that will make my experience complete is the auto-focus on "Search bookmarks.." when the Side Pane appears. Now I am forced to click with the mouse :) #nomouse :)Developer response

Yes, a bug was open on Firefox 8 months ago -> https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1502713
Need to wait that it is corrected, I didn't find a workaround so far.

Update, in Linux Firefox 67.0 I see that it works, so this is only on Windows Firefox that we are waiting for the fix to come .. - Rated 4 out of 5by addon_bob, 6 years ago
- Rated 4 out of 5by Thomas Bertels, 6 years agoIt does perfectly what I want it to do: to show in which folder a bookmark is.
However, on install, it opens itself in every window (and replaces Tree Style Tab), where we have to close it or switch back. It would be better to open it only in the active window or none at all if that's not doable.Developer response
posted 6 years agoHello Thomas, correct, this is the default behavior of FF -> https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Add-ons/WebExtensions/manifest.json/sidebar_action
This is a security default, so that an install doesn't go unnoticed by the user.
Note that:
- If you immediately redisplay the previous sidebar you had, then subsequent new windows use the one you just selected.
- When you close FF with a sidebar open, next time it restarts, it reopens with the same sidebar you had at time of close.
These are FF behaviors at this time which an add-on cannot modify. - Rated 4 out of 5by Judykator, 6 years ago
- Rated 4 out of 5by JoAb, 7 years agoNo toolbar icon for this extension; can use CTRl-Q keyboard shortcut in Windows to open the extn in the sidebar. The search seems to work fine; the lower pane shows the bookmark location within the fully expanded bookmark tree, so if your searched bookmark is the 100th within a partcular folder/parent you would have to scroll up in the sidebar a 100 rows to find which folder is the parent. Perhaps you could initially just show the bookmark position within a folded bookmark tree, and an option (say a "+" icon) to expand the parent folder and/or the whole tree. Not sure if this is technically possible though, just my thought
Developer response
posted 7 years agoHello JoAb, thank you for the comments.
There is a toolbar icon for the extension. It is a yellow star with a "+" sign inside it. Maybe you removed it or you have something hiding it ? In the first case, try "additional tools" on far right of the toolbar, then "customize toolbar" .. and you should find it and be able to drag it back to the toolbar.
On the thing you suggest for "show search", this is not easily possible. but also this wouldn't match the frequent behavior that users often search for a boookmark to find where to drag a new bookmark which they want to put / create in that same folder and around the same place => they need to see the full contents of the folder around the searched bookmark to place the new bookmark.
By the way, this is exactly reproducing the behavior of the initial Bookmark Search Plus extension (pre-Quantum), which BSP2 is replacing.
Thank you, aaFn.
******** Edit ************************
On second thought, a proposal I could make is to add an action to the right click context menu which would be "Go parent folder" .. and it would jump you directly to the parent 100 rows above without you scrolling for it.
That action could be both in the main bookmark and in the search result panes .. what do you think ?
If that looks good to you, would you mind opening it as an issue on https://github.com/aaFn/Bookmark-search-plus-2/issues ?
Cheers, aaFn.
******** Edit again ******************
Never mind, on third thought, I believe this is a useful feature for all, so I opened the issue myself
https://github.com/aaFn/Bookmark-search-plus-2/issues/55
and implemented the function in 2.0.34.
AaFn. - Rated 4 out of 5by alexg, 7 years agowould've been better if it was integrated into the bookmark manager itself
also would be nice to have an option to show a column for parent folders in the bookmark manager.Developer response
posted 7 years agoHello alexg, thank you.
As said in some other post below, this is unfortunately not possible as of Firefox 57 and higher.
Quantum does not allow any add-on action in the bookmark manager.
aaFn - Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 14093961, 7 years agoI have a lot of bookmarks divided into many sub-folders, this extension is essential for orientation in this jungle.
Thank you very very very very much!!!!
the only negative side is that when you view properties of a single bookmark, you can only see the "name" and the "address".
To be perfect it should also show the other properties of each bookmark as you would see by clicking with the right mouse button on "properties" of the single bookmark in Firefox without additional components.
In any case, I can only thank you again for this extension.
Really thank you.
MatteoDeveloper response
posted 7 years agoHello Matteo, unfortunately, as said on the add-on main / description page, there is no management / display of bookmark tags, keywords, description field possible as Firefox does not expose those fields through its Web Extension API's.
This is a long open bug to FF (3 years) -> https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1225916
Until they are made is available by FF, it won't be possible to manage them in BSP2. - Rated 4 out of 5by Chris, 7 years agoGreat add-on - unfortunately it removes the entry "Sort By Name" from the folder pop-up (right click on a folder)
Developer response
posted 7 years agoHello, I can add it if this is really used.
Mind that because of FF new WebExtension API limitations, I had to recreate a user interface ... so I am incrementally enriching it as per user demand.
If you want the function, would you mind creating the demand here so that we track it ?
