We're not switching off the free plan. We're no longer offering an unlimited free plan. We offer 20 free credits a month. Most of our users do not send more than that, so they can continue using it without payment. But we do need to maintain and develop the service, and so for those who are able to, or who use the service a lot, we ask for a small payment ($2/month). As for alternatives, they do exist, and we encourage users to try them out. With services like ours, Kindle delivery is only one aspect of the service. The bigger and more challenging part is article extraction. That's where you're likely to notice the biggest difference in quality. Push to Kindle works better on many sites than competing services, but for other sites it might not do as well. So we do encourage users to experiment and see what works well for the sites that interest them.

Hi VC, we do not actually run adverts in the sense I think you're thinking of. The books we list are ones we've picked out ourselves and recommend. It's a small number. I'm not aware of any of these books promoting nationalistic and xenophobic ideologies. The titles of the books which appear after sending to the Kindle completes are:

[2018-09-03: Update to the below, having looked into it some more: When we released the extension, there was no way to achieve what the extension does without requesting permissions that would cause Firefox to display the ominous warning you object to. We have updated the add-on accordingly. But I want to stress that the add-on was never doing anything "malicious", as you suggest above. When we originally released the add-on, before the introduction of the new permission, there was simply no way to implement what we wanted without incurring that permission warning.]

Hi there, you're right that the add-on really only just appends the current tab's URL to our Push to Kindle URL when the user clicks our toolbar button. The new URL is:

I think the ‘read all content on all pages’ warning Firefox shows you is really just letting you know that the permissions for the extension allow us to do more than what we're currently doing. But of course we understand the concern. We certainly don't want to be giving the impression that we're reading people's content when we're not. I'm pretty certain the permissions we require for this simple add-on to function (ie. to get the tab URL of the current page you're viewing when you click our toolbar button) have always displayed this rather stark warning.

But I'm curious if with recent WebExtension developments we can now achieve the same thing without requiring the permissions that generate this warning. We'll take a look soon. If we can do it, of course we'll reduce the permissions.

Hi there, sorry about that. We recently converted the addon to the new WebExtensions format that Mozilla is moving to. When we submitted it, it was marked as compatible with all platforms (including Android). Having looked into it now, it appears this is not the case. According to Mozilla docs, "Add-ons that work with desktop Firefox do not automatically work in Firefox for Android" - https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/Firefox_for_Android

I've just removed Android from the compatibility section. Hopefully this gets reflected on the site and it's no longer shown as compatible.

We do offer Push to Kindle as an Android app that's compatible with Firefox and other browsers and apps (we are placed as an option in the list of 'share' destinations). I think it's a better option for mobile as it's designed to be used from small devices. It is, however, not free like this extension.
